The Darkening Wild
A Wight (which is simply Anglo-Saxon for “man”) is a dead body that is animated by sorcery, malice, or even an ancient curse. Slower but far stronger than a normal Man, Wights haunt the graves where they were once buried, jealously guarding their grave-goods and luring unsuspecting travelers to join them in their tombs. Like many creatures of darkness, Wights do not come out in sunlight, but they are a reason why there are few who would remain near a burial site after dark, and why tomb-robbers are less frequent than one might expect.
The Necromancer of Dol Guldur got his name from the fact that after his coming, Mirkwood became home to many Wights and Wraiths.
