The Darkening Wild
Hobbits are a small, quiet folk who now currently live primarily in an area of Western Middle-Earth called the Shire. Once long ago it is rumored that they lived elsewhere, perhaps along the banks of the Anduin, or in tunnels in the hills, but the Shire is their home now, and they rarely leave it for any reason.
The only Hobbit who might be known to the wider world, and to those living in the Wild in particular, is one Bilbo Baggins. He was the Lucky Number and the Burglar who traveled with Thorin and Company and helped them recover the Lonely Mountain from Smaug. There are many rumors and legends about Bilbo and his exploits, including robbing the Elvenking, drowning and resuscitating the Dwarves he traveled with, stealing Smaug’s gold and even robbing Thorin Oakenshield himself. For their part, the Dwarves of the Lonely Mountain only speak of Bilbo fondly, and a few are even known to visit him in the distant Shire from time to time.
